Religion and the Masses

In last night's episode of Rome on HBO (Stealing from Saturn) Caesar bribed a priest to rig a public augury. He paid an obscene amount of money so that the augury would look favorably upon his actions (entering Rome under arms and declaring martial law).

This got me thinking about the role of religion in politics. It seems that while those in power only use it as a tool for gain, commoners believe in it deeply. Several characters on the show pay homage often and are emotionally affected by portents and omens.

Although the LARP is set 300 years before the show, it seems to me that these attitudes could certainly prevail in the game.
