Costumes

I have not been much for costuming in the past. It can be hard to do when you don't know your role ahead of time. This year, getting ahold of a burlap sack (slave) or making a toga should not prove too difficult. I'll have to do some research on fabric stores in the Collinsville area, but sheets will do in a pinch. Meanwhile, here is a site with instructions on how to make a toga:

Grow a Beard?

From the Wikipedia entry on Carthage, "Priests were clean shaven, unlike most of the population."

So I think I might grow a beard in case I'm not a priest and shave if I am.

Today's projected forecast for next Thursday, Friday and Saturday:

Keep Your Gas Tank Filled

Gas prices could reach upwards of $5.00 per gallon after Rita hits Texas:

Rita could equal $5 gas

So, if you drive to Archon from out of town, keep an eye out for fuel pump prices and top off your tank on Friday before she hits.

What is a "Suffete"?

The blurb from the games page mentions, "With a new Suffete being elected on Saturday, everyone has a role to fill." But what is a "Suffete"?

Well, from the wiki entry on Carthage, "Greco-Roman accounts show the indigenous term was Sofetim "Judges" (the same name rulers are given in the Bible), which might originally have been the title of the city's governor installed by the mother city of Tyre. Later, one sofet or two sofetem, who were believed to have exercised judicial and executive (but not military) functions, were elected annually from among the most wealthy and influential families. These aristocratic families were represented in a supreme council comparable to the Roman senate that had a wide range of powers. However, it is not known whether the sofetim were elected by this council or by an assembly of the people. Although the city's administration was firmly controlled by oligarchs, democratic elements were to be found as well: Carthage had elected legislators, trade unions and town meetings. There was a system of checks and balances, as well as public accountability: the Head of the Admiralty would have to pay with his life for military defeat."

So there you have it, we are electing the new king-type-person. Well some of us. I imagine there will be noble, slave, priest and foreign characters in the game. Carthage was a port of trade and I'm sure may foreign interests will try to manipulate the outcome of the election. I can't imagine the king having much power as he is, after all, elected. You have to bend your will to your supporter's interests, after all. The true power is often behind the throne and not on it. Get busy on Friday, candidates! You'll have to act more quickly than your rivals to get as much support as you can for the election on Saturday.

The PocketMod

The PocketMod is a handy disposable organizer that can be printed out on one sheet of paper. I made one to carry around during the LARP to take notes with. Check it out:

Religion and the Masses

In last night's episode of Rome on HBO (Stealing from Saturn) Caesar bribed a priest to rig a public augury. He paid an obscene amount of money so that the augury would look favorably upon his actions (entering Rome under arms and declaring martial law).

This got me thinking about the role of religion in politics. It seems that while those in power only use it as a tool for gain, commoners believe in it deeply. Several characters on the show pay homage often and are emotionally affected by portents and omens.

Although the LARP is set 300 years before the show, it seems to me that these attitudes could certainly prevail in the game.
