Kateryn Preston (1421)

Kateryn Preston

Your mother died giving birth to you 17 years ago. Your father, Finán, is a wealthy landowner in the town of Dunne Boyne. He and your brother Jacob take extreme cautions in protecting your virginity. You never leave the house without escort. You are whisked away any time conflict appears imminent. Finally, a guard is stationed outside of your room on a nightly basis.

None of this bothers you; you only want to do what is best for the family. The guilt of killing your mother troubles you to this day. If there were just some way you could make up for it, you would be happy.

Your faith in God has put you through to this point in life, and your father intends on marrying you off this weekend for political gain. You hope it is to the Irish, because you speak Gaelic in your normal activities. You probably wouldn’t get along with any of the upper class Englishmen.

This weekend is a big social that your father is hosting. Friday night is a dance, and Saturday night is a joust. Your father is letting you roam around on your own to find a man to your suiting, but he reserves the right to make the final choice. You know that all of the major players from Dublin and Cavan/Meath are going to be there. If you had your druthers, you would find a Kelly to marry off to. They are a secretive clan that teaches the poor children of the area behind the backs of the English. You love their compassion, and know that the patriarch of the clan, Trian, is available. He is older, but what man wouldn’t have interest in a fine, pure maiden like you.

Your father doesn’t know about your preferences yet, but the dance would be the perfect venue to introduce him to your favorites.

As for your family, the only other member of significance is Matilda. She is a tragic figure. She married your brother after she got pregnant 5 years ago then miscarried after the wedding. The rumor is that the baby wasn’t even his. That couple has been totally unhappy, and you think that Matilda is capable of killing your brother. She loves grating on your father’s nerves, but there’s nothing you can do about it.

You’ve heard rumors on the estate that a few of the Irish have been up to no good. It is rapidly becoming no secret that Fergus O’Sullivan burns the food stocks in Dublin. This just compounds the problems they are having with the plague. As for Ireland proper, they are under famine.

You know that a sewing circle meets once a week so that the women can gossip and share tips. You would love to get involved in this, because you are quite a good seamstress yourself. Áine O’Toole is the senior member of this group, and the O’Casey twins (Gráinne and Dearbháil) also attend.

There are a lot of things to do and find out about this weekend, be careful!

What is this?
