Finán Preston (1421)

Finán Preston
Owner of Estate

You were born 35-40 years ago in Norman Ireland (Dunne Boyne) to a rather wealthy family. You’ve led a rough life since then.

You inherited the Preston estate from your father 20 years ago at the age of 15 and were married off within a year by your uncle, who acted as your regent. By the time you were 18 you had 2 children and your wife died giving birth to the second one. By the time you were 20 you had arranged to have that despicable uncle taken care of.

Over the last 15 years, you have raised your two kids (Jacob and Kateryn) and somehow managed to hold onto the entire estate by housing both English and Irish during the battles between them. Now, peace has broken out because a plague has stricken Dublin and famine is gripping Ireland.

Last month, Úna O’Reilly asked you to host a social event so that Irish and English dignitaries could meet. She indicated that Cormac O’Reilly would put his daughter, Generis, up as the prize for a joust. Úna is the type of woman you don’t refuse, so you set it up. Besides, it opens up a number of opportunities.

This weekend is the meeting. Friday night is the dance, and Saturday night is the joust. It will be up to you to protect the lances between Friday and Saturday, so you will have an opportunity to make some extra cash by allowing individuals to “prepare” their equipment. Only you and Jacob have access to the lances.

There are a number of single, wealthy men on both the English and Irish side. If you can marry off Kateryn (virginity intact!) by the end of the joust, you could seal an alliance with the winning side of the conflict when it resumes. Just make sure you know which side will win the conflict before you promise her away. Of course, you could promise her to two people and make sure someone really loses before the end of the weekend.

As for your son, he is married to Matilda. This woman is grating in every way possible. She has no social skills, never bathes, and has breath that will kill livestock. Jacob got her pregnant and married her because he is a good man. Then the wench miscarried, so he is stuck with her. You have ordered her to be cleaned up on pain of death so that you can marry her off to another man before he realizes what he bought. You also need to get a priest to annul the marriage (on the basis that it was never consummated, and that she is barren) while you accomplish this. Perhaps a land grant will grease the church wheels.

Finally, you have heard that some Welsh rebels might show up. These pigs could throw a wrench into everything, so any distraction you provide them would be a bonus. You won’t be able to eject them from your premises without getting the permission of Lord Moyglare AND Cormac O’Reilly.

Keep your nose in everything, get those women married off, and make sure it all goes smoothly.

What is this?
